FACT: How Common Is A Medical Misdiagnosis?

According to a study undertaken by the Mayo Clinic (2017) in the USA, it was found that 21% (1 out of 5) of serious cases were diagnosed incorrectly.

A wrong diagnosis and incorrect treatment can set a patient on the wrong path and lower the chances of recovery. Getting a second opinion from an experienced specialist at a leading hospital can help to reduce this chance.

If 1 in 5 serious medical cases are misdiagnosed in the United States each year, what do you think the percentage is in your country? Don’t risk it and get a SMO today.

WHO NEEDS A SECOND OPINION?

“My doctor says I need surgery, but I’m going to get a second opinion.”

OR

“My doctor says I only need chemotherapy, but I’m going to get a second opinion.”

These statements may save your life & help you get the right treatment.

When it comes to your health and treatment, ensuring you are getting the right treatment can mean everything. Getting a second opinion from a specialist in the same field assists in giving certainty that the advice from the first specialist is correct. But who may need a second opinion?

  1. If you have been diagnosed with a serious condition and would like to confirm the diagnosis.
  2. If you have been told to undergo surgery and would like to know if that is the best option or if there may be alternatives.
  3. If you have been told to undergo serious medical treatment and would like to know if that is the right treatment or what other treatment options may be recommended.

Q: WHEN DO I NEED TO SEEK FOR A SECOND OPINION?

A: You may want another opinion to:

  • Make sure your diagnosis is right
  • Get advice from a doctor with expertise on your condition
  • Explore other treatment options
  • If you’re considering some new experimental approach or a procedure that involves using experimental instruments or devices.

Q: WHY DO PEOPLE HESITATE TO GET A SECOND MEDICAL OPINION

A: Some patients may be concerned that obtaining a second opinion may offend their current doctor. However you should not be:

  • Your local doctor should not be offended, as they know that an inaccurate diagnosis can have severe consequences for patients and that it is challenging for any one doctor to know about every available option.
  • Many doctors around the world will reach out to their colleagues for opinions on their cases, especially when a colleague has experience particular to a patient’s case. Getting a Second Opinion from another doctor is the same.
  • New treatments are appearing very rapidly, and a doctor’s background and experience handling complex cases matters. Not all doctors have such experience and so getting a second opinion can be important.
  • Having additional information about your diagnosis and treatment can only be helpful to you. It should be your right to seek a second medical opinion.

Q: WHAT ARE THE COMMON CONDITIONS THAT PATIENTS SEEK A SECOND OPINION FOR?

A: Most patients consider getting a second opinion on the following:

  • Cancer
  • Heart problems
  • Conditions affecting the brain or spinal cord
  • Conditions affecting the kidneys, liver and other major organs
  • Conditions affecting your child and other congenital defects
  • Psychological or mental illness
  • Sexual problems and diseases affecting the reproductive organs
  • Any other health or medical concern

Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

A: The cost of getting a second opinion depends on a number of factors: the doctors fee that they charge, the country of the doctor, the complexity of the case, whether any other specialists may need to be consulted, and the case may require a multi-specialty review. We have strived to make this service as affordable as possible and have created a package with the doctors we work with to ensure you get the most value for your money. Each SMO includes the following:

  1. A detailed case review by the specialist of your choice within the MHA network;
  2. A Second Medical Opinion Report; and
  3. An online discussion with the doctor to allow you to ask any questions you may have.

However the cost is usually between USD 50/KSH 5,000 to USD 100/KSH 10,000. Please contact us to allow us to confirm the cost for your case.

Q: WHAT IF I HAVE A FEELING OF URGENCY ABOUT STARTING TREATMENT IMMEDIATELY, ESPECIALLY WITH A SERIOUS DIAGNOSIS LIKE CANCER?

A: Starting the wrong treatment can have severe consequences. While starting treatment quickly is important, starting the wrong treatment can be worse.

We understand your urgency and will work towards you getting a Second Opinion as quickly as possible from one of the specialists in the MHA network.

Q: I AM UNABLE TO TRAVEL TO HAVE A SPECIALIST REVIEW MY CASE. WHAT CAN I DO?

A: Starting the wrong treatment can have severe consequences. While starting treatment quickly is important, starting the wrong treatment can be worse.

We understand that this can be a real challenge, especially during COVID19. This is why we have introduced the remote Second Opinion Service, for you to access quality Second Medical Opinions, without the need to travel.

Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR THE SECOND OPINION?

A: You need to have your most recent (at most 6 months) medical records, imaging, pathology slides or any other test results  relevant to your condition that will help the Specialist provide a second opinion for you.
