The transplant team will evaluate your condition and diagnosis and determine if a bone marrow transplant would benefit you.
The transplant team will discuss with you the treatment options that are best suited for your diagnosis.
You will be required to stay in the hospital for about 3 weeks if you have an autologous transplant and about 4 weeks if you have an allogeneic transplant.
You will be given medicine and blood transfusions and monitored closely to prevent infection.
You might experience side effects such as nausea and vomiting, difficulty eating, swelling, weakness, fatigue, rashes, and hair loss. The transplant team will monitor you closely to manage the side effects of the bone marrow transplant.
The period of your recovery depends on the type of transplant you receive, how your body responds to it, and whether you develop any other illnesses resulting from the transplant.
Before returning to work or school, you will have to wait for about 3-6 months following an autologous transplant and 6-12 months following an allogeneic transplant.
